So who is Jade Perkins apart from being the expert health coach everybody wants to workout with? I am so thrilled we finally got to do this interview.

JADE: Thank you so much for having me, it’s a pleasure to speak with you. I am originally from a small city just north of Boston, MA. I decided to go to college in Boston and am proud to be from such a beautiful city. I started modeling at the age of 15 and continued to work as a model through college. I studied Fashion Merchandising & Design, and after graduating I really wanted to continue to focus on my full – time career as a model. I was able to meet a lot of interesting people, travel to many places and work in fashion, which is something I’ve always loved.

As a model, I had a healthy diet for the most part,  and stayed active as I had to be “bikini ready” year round. I tried all kinds of workouts, diets, supplements etc. but I really noticed a difference in my body when I started taking Barre classes.

BILJANA: I first encountered Barre workouts trough your workout videos on your Instagram. Can you explain more about this workout practice and the benefits it offers?

JADE: Barre classes have the perfect low impact, full body burn I’ve always longed for! In my classes you can expect to use lighter weights, do lots of reps and experience a full body burn accompanied by a full body shake! The intention is to bring your muscles to fatigue, burn fat and build long, lean, strong muscles. I was always concerned with bulking when I was a full-time model. Don’t worry, you won’t bulk with Barre! It’s one of the most effective, fastest ways to sculpt and shape your entire body. I saw a complete difference after 14 classes (about 3 weeks).  Friends and family mentioned the differences they saw as well! I also love that flexibility is a major focus in Barre classes. We stretch the muscles after each intense burst. Just because Barre is low impact, doesn’t mean it’s easy!

BILJANA: I know you are certified for other workout techniques as well. Can you please share your fields of expertise and introduce our readers to the online courses you have available, as well as possibilities for private sessions etc?

JADE: As a model I was always focused on staying thin enough to fit into anything I was handed – which has it’s pros and cons as I’m sure you can imagine. I wanted to do something better for my body – and also help others. That’s when I decided to go for my Barre and Pilates certifications. Since becoming certified to teach Barre and Pilates Mat and Reformer,  I’ve decided to branch out and become certified in other formats including HIIT and cardio. I incorporate Barre sculpting methods into all my classes, including cardio and HIIT. I really believe in the technique.

BILJANA: I love your guided Total Body practices. Can you tell me more about your workout routine?

JADE: Thank you! I teach a lot of classes and private sessions each week. Doing my own workouts can sometimes be challenging as I like to give my body a break for at least one day during the week. However, I do love incorporating Barre, Pilates, cardio, and perhaps a HIIT session throughout the week. Since I’ve been teaching online classes, I usually get a great workout at least once a day. I find it important to slow down on my one day off. Taking a yin yoga class, stretching and meditation are my favorite things to do on my off days. I’ve added a sound bowl meditation + stretch class into my online class schedule; it’s called STILL. I encourage anyone who needs to relax and stretch for just 30 minutes to try it out! It’s really a rejuvenating experience.

BILJANA: Aside from being an amazing fitness coach you are an excellent cook whose kitchen is packed with nutrients, vitamins, and a whole bunch of love. Every cook I’ve met claims Love indeed is the secret ingredient, but I would love to discover more of your culinary assertions and healthy secrets and tips. (Can you share a recipe with us)

JADE: Absolutely. If there is no love for the act of cooking, or the ingredients you’re using, I can almost assure you that your dish will not be as creative or delicious. The people eating your food can tell if you’ve put effort into making the dish. Presentation is important as well. I’m sure you’ve heard that we eat with our eyes first. It’s very true. Make sure whatever your making looks good on the plate! I like to add fresh herbs or a sprinkle of seasoning just before I serve my meals to give it an extra color pop!

I love incorporating fresh ginger, turmeric, black pepper and celtic sea salt into my recipes. Ginger and turmeric are both anti-inflammatory and have endless health benefits. Black pepper has a compound called piperine which enhances the absorption of curcumin (turmeric) in the body by up to 2,000% increasing it’s bioavailability!  I try to combine these spices, and supplements, whenever possible. They may reduce inflammation, improve digestion, decrease symptoms of arthritis and much more:) My Spicy Thai Kelp Noodle Soup uses these seasonings, I hope you love it as much as I do!

BILJANA: It seems staying fit doesn’t present a problem for you. What is your food philosophy and do you follow a particular diet that complements your lifestyle?

JADE: I’m enjoying not having to worry about staying thin as I’ve changed my diet quite a bit since the age of 25. I met my now husband then, and he was Paleo. I started incorporating a Paleo way of eating into my lifestyle, however I had been mostly vegetarian for a few years (occasionally eating fish). Once I became Paleo, I started eating more fish and cutting out grains, legumes and dairy. I really noticed a change in my energy levels, there was less bloating and my asthma was less active. In the last 2 years I discovered the Plant Paradox by Dr. Gundry. I’ve implemented a few more changes to my diet like limiting nightshades and lectins that cause inflammation and gut irritation, and sometimes leaky gut. Our health is all in our gut, so it’s extremely important to take care of it!

Most people reading this are probably thinking, “you don’t eat gluten, dairy, soy, legumes, red meat, nightshades… what do you eat?!” I’ve been asked that question many times, and the answer is, a lot! I’ve just had to alter the foods I eat, and let me tell you, there are so many foods out there that are amazing. I’m still trying new things.

A few of my recent new obsessions are dandelion greens, chestnuts, flax + hemp! I try to prepare my meals with anti-inflammatory, healing ingredients. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to start a blog, because a lot of people don’t know how easy it is to prepare delicious, healing meals!

BILJANA: How did you become such a good cook?

JADE: My grandmother and mother were both very good cooks. I can remember cooking with them in the kitchen when I was a little girl. I think that’s where my passion comes from. I wasn’t always a good cook though! In college I survived mostly on beans, salads and pasta haha:) It was after I graduated that I started taking an interest in cooking more interesting meals. Cooking is therapeutic in itself. I love preparing a beautiful, healing meal for loved ones. It’s one of the ways I show my love, and give back.

BILJANA: Everybody is aware of the importance of eating healthy. What does your favorite menu du jour include? What are the most important ingredients in your diet?

JADE: Eating healthy can mean different things to different people. Every BODY is different. I try to eat the way I do because I know what foods bring me down, and what foods lift me up! I try to eat organic, with a mix of Paleo + Plant Paradox. I’m not a big meat eater. Occasionally I will have chicken, but I prefer fish. A typical dinner for me includes a delicious and easy to prepare fish, something green and maybe a sweet potato side:) As my husband says, I usually “Jade-ify” all my meals, so sweet potatoes will probably have coconut oil, cinnamon and nutmeg on them for example. Why should eating healthy have to taste bland? It shouldn’t! That’s why I like to incorporate lots of spices, herbs and even curry into my dishes. It’s amazing what a little coconut milk + lime can do to a simple vegetable soup.

BILJANA: I know everybody is impatient for the launch so can you share with us more about your blog launching next month and your future plans?

JADE: Currently I don’t have the exact date of my blog launch, however it will be August 2020! The exact date will come soon! I will be sharing my favorite healing recipes, self care practices, holistic living guidance and information, LIVE virtual classes and virtual private sessions. I can’t wait for the launch! The goal is for everyone who visits my site to feel at home and visit often for everything they need in order to feel like the best version of themselves.

As far as my interests and goals, this is ever changing! I’m a free spirit and I’m always looking for new inspiration. One thing I’m sure of is that I’m obsessed with leading a healthy lifestyle and I want to continue to help others, and inspire them to eat mindfully and move every day! Once you experience your BEST self and how it feels, it becomes addicting and you will always want to feel your best!

BILJANA: How did you achieve this level of devotion when it comes to healthy lifestyle? We all know the amount of effort needed to do all the things you do concerning wellness, what is your advice on how to keep it up when one is tempted to quit?

JADE: As I mentioned before, I have always had to stay active and healthy to stay fit as a model. It’s been a passion of mine for a long time. Once you know what it feels like to feel like your best self, you will want to feel like that all the time! It’s a good addiction to have 🙂
